Section 1: Bangor to Bethesda

Constructed to transport slate from Lord Penrhyn`s slate quarries at Bethesda to Port Penrhyn, the new railway was around six miles long and used a gauge of 1 ft 10.75 in. It was one of the oldest narrow gauge railways in the world and closed in 1962.

The village of Bethesda – known locally as Pesda – at the lower end of the Ogwen Valley – grew up around it, mainly in the 19 th century, when it was the largest slate quarry in the world. The slate quarried there was taken to nearby Porth Penrhyn, on the outskirts of the city of Bangor, from where it was exported worldwide.

First developed in 1770 by Richard Pennant, who became the first Baron Penrhyn, Penrhyn Quarry, a huge pit a mile long and 1200 ft deep is reputedly the world's largest slate quarry. Profits from the quarry financed the construction of Penrhyn Castle at nearby Bangor.
